Benefits of Natural Honey

Honey has been consumed for thousands of years for its supposed health benefits. Jar of honey with wooden dipper on top dripping honey.

Honey has been consumed for thousands of years for its supposed health benefits

Modern science is finding evidence for many of the historical uses of honey.

1) Healing wounds and burns

There have been some cases in which people have reported positive effects of using honey in treating wounds.
review published in The Cochrane Libraryindicated that honey might be able to help heal burns. The lead author of the study said that "topical honey is cheaper than other interventions, notably oral antibiotics, which are often used and may have other deleterious side effects."
However, there is a lack of evidence to fully support this claim. In fact, a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases concluded that applying medical-grade honey to the wounds of patients has no advantage over normal antibioticsamong patients undergoing dialysis.
Honey should never be given to young infants as it can cause botulism, a rare but severe type of food poisoning.

2) Reducing the duration of diarrhea

According to research-based reviews on honey, it has been shown to decrease the severity and duration of diarrhea. Honey also promotes increased potassium and water intake, which is particularly helpful when experiencing diarrhea.
Research that took place in Lagos, Nigeria suggests that honey has also shown the ability to block the actions of pathogens that commonly cause diarrhea.

3) Preventing acid reflux

Recent research has shown that honey can reduce the upward flow of stomach acid and undigested food by lining the esophagus and stomach.
This has helped to reduce the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD can cause inflammationacid reflux, and heartburn.

4) Fighting infections

In 2010, scientists from the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam reported in FASEB Journal that honey's ability to kill bacteria lies in a protein called defensin-1.
A more recent study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases showed that a certain type of honey, called Manuka honey, can help prevent the bacteria Clostridium difficile from settling in the body. C. difficile is known for causing severe diarrhea and sickness.
Some studies have revealed that Manuka honey may even be effective for the treatment of MRSAinfections.

Honey Properties

Honey contains negligible amounts of vitamins and minerals.
Properties

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database, one tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, 17.3 grams (g) of sugar, and 0 g of fiber, fat, and protein.
Choosing honey over refined and processed sugar may lead to long-term health benefits. Honey is known to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and soothing effects.
It is made up of glucose, fructose, and minerals, such as iron, calcium, phosphate, sodium chloride, potassium, and magnesium.
Below is a typical honey profile, according to BeeSource:
  • Fructose: 38.2 percent
  • Glucose: 31.3 percent
  • Maltose: 7.1 percent
  • Sucrose: 1.3 percent
  • Water: 17.2 percent
  • Higher sugars: 1.5 percent
  • Ash: 0.2 percent
  • Other: 3.2 percent
The slightly acidic pH level of honey is what helps prevent the growth of bacteria, while its antioxidant elements clean up free radicals that are linked to diseases.
The physical properties of honey vary depending on the specific flora used in its production, as well as its water content.

Modern langstroth

Our Polystyrene (Poly) hives offer exceptional thermal performance and durability whilst maintaining an ergonomic design. This means a higher honey production compared to wooden hives, but with minimal weight. These types of polystyrene hive do not use crown boards, instead we have an in built feeding system for fondant so that you don't need an eke.
A complete high density polystyrene (EPS) Langstroth hive from leading manufacturer Paradise Honey consisting of

Langstroth roof
Langstroth floor and varroa mesh
3 x full depth bodies
Queen excluder
Varroa tray
Feed plate cover
Hive entrance reducer
2.5m Hive strap
Hive screws
This is probably the most technically advanced hive currently available in the UK. The material of construction, high density polystyrene, now dominates the market in many part of europe and there are tens of thousands of hives like this in use and the british beekeeper can be reassured this is a high quality product that works. The hive is designed for a working life of at least 30 years and will take a lot of hard use, such as migratory beekeeping. Designed and supplied by Paradise Honey ltd of finland the hive represents the culmination of years of experience and research into the development of the perfect bee hive.
Takes 10 full depth langstroth frames.
You can find all of langstroth's complete hives HERE.

Hive Health Monitor

We've gathered thousands of hours of beehive audio from all over the world to bring you the BuzzBox Hive Health Monitor. Our team of data scientists have built a system that can automatically tell you how your bees are doing based on input from the kit's microphone, and you'll get updates on your smart phone in real time.
We can currently track the following states:
  • Empty/Collapsed
  • Active/Normal
  • Pre-Swarm/Swarm
  • Missing Queen
Just like a Tesla, we can broadcast over-the-air product updates to the entire BuzzBox fleet, so as we get more data from you, we'll add new hive classifications.

The BuzzBox App is available for both Android and iOS. Developed by Stanfy, we're in active beta and are constantly adding new features based on feedback from beekeepers and our community. Check out the collaboration section below to tell us what you want to see!
Stay tuned as we add more hive states when the data comes back from the field:
  • Varroa Mites
  • Wax Moths
  • Pesticide Toxicity
  • More to come...

We're working with an accredited lab to gather data from 24 hives exposed to a variety of pesticides. We sincerely hope that bees exposed to pesticides emit a unique audio signal that we can detect. The results will start to come through at the beginning of August, 2017, and if they're positive, we'll begin adding pesticide-detecting features to the BuzzBox. Imagine receiving immediate warning when your bees face toxicity sickness. This line of thought opens up a variety of exciting possibilities, so watch this space for updates.

The heart of the project is our beehive audio classification system. Using a growing database of beehive audio and metadata, we've added a hive health monitor to the BuzzBox app so you know what your bees are doing in real time. For more information, check out the Open Source Beehives documentation.
