honey can soothe your irritated throat

Warm tea that is sweetened with honey can help soothe your irritated throat. Tea also keeps you hydrated, which is another important step in treating a sore throat. Brew up a cup next time a sore throat starts to tickle.
You might consider choosing a green tea, which serves as an antibacterial, pain reliever, and rich source of antioxidants, as well as helps reduce inflammation.

In countries across Africa, honey bees could help protect wildlife, grow food and make money – so why aren’t more people raising them?

Our need for bees is practical: bees and other pollinators support the food chain. “Some 80% of indigenous flowering plants in Africa benefit from honey bee pollination, and approximately one-third of all food produced is the result of commercial honey bee pollination,” says Mike Allsopp, a honey bee specialist at South Africa’s Agricultural Research Council.

Natural Honey Imports by Country

Natural honey jars (Pixabay.com)Worldwide purchases of imported natural honey totaled US$2.2 billion in 2018.

Overall, the cost of natural honey imports declined by an average -3.3% for all importing countries since 2014 when natural honey purchases were valued at $2.3 billion. Year over year, imported natural honey retreated by -4.7% from 2017 to 2018.

From a continental perspective, European countries bought the highest dollar worth of imported natural honey during 2018 with purchases costing $1.2 billion or 52.3% of the global total. In second place were North American importers at 23.8% while 20% of worldwide natural honey imports were delivered to Asia.

Smaller percentages were sold to customers in Oceania (2.4%), Africa (1.1%) and Latin America (0.3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for natural honey is 0409.

What is the demand for honey in Europe?

How much honey is imported into Europe?

European imports rising in volume

Europe is the second largest global producer of honey. However, it is not self-sufficient and is dependent on honey imports from other countries. In fact, around 40% of Europe’s consumption needs are met through honey imports.
European imports of honey increased considerably between 2011 and 2015, amounting to more than 339,000 tonnes in 2015.
The continuous increase of European honey imports is mostly attributed to the substantial decrease of the European beekeeping sector, but is also the result of various problems related to major honey sources in previous years, such as droughts.
Germany is the largest honey importer, representing a share of 26% of the total volume of European imports, amounting to more than 88,000 tonnes in 2015.
The UK (12% of total imports), France (10%), Belgium (10%) and Spain (9%) are the other main European importers. Honey importers in these countries process the honey and sell it both domestically and abroad.
In the next five years, honey imports are expected to increase further in order to compensate for the continuous decline of the European production.

More Honey needed to be produced

1459284061warre-honeycomb-harvest-641-1024x684

About 3,750 tonnes of honey were produced in the country last year, according to the federation of beekeepers’ cooperatives in Rwanda.

In June 2014, Rwanda was accredited among third party countries to export honey to the European Union, thanks to the quality compliance of its natural honey. However, supply isn’t meeting the demand, Anselme Nzabonimpa, the president of the federation of beekeepers’ cooperatives in Rwanda told The New Times.
“Though Rwanda’s honey was awarded European Union market, they [buyers in the EU] are requesting us to assure them of a sustainable supply of honey from January 1 to December 31. Yet, honey in Rwanda is harvested only in July, August and September and they needed 20 tonnes of honey per week more than our production capacity then,” he said.
Nzabonimpa added that to get enough honey to export they need to produce at least over 5,000 tonnes of honey per year.
Another concern is that honey that comes from Vietnam and China to the EU market is cheaper, at $4 a kilogramme, compared to Rwandan honey, which goes for $9 a kilogramme on the EU market.
“There are some business people who said they would be giving us $4 per kilogramme once the honey has reached the Kigali International Airport and they would pay for the flight charges themselves. But, we realised that it would be a raw deal for us,” he told The New Times last Thursday.
A kilogramme of honey from beekeepers costs between Rwf2,100 and Rwf2,600.
Nzabonimpa, however, said they have embarked on measures to increase honey produce to meet the EU demand.

Benefits of Natural Honey

Honey has been consumed for thousands of years for its supposed health benefits. Jar of honey with wooden dipper on top dripping honey.

Honey has been consumed for thousands of years for its supposed health benefits

Modern science is finding evidence for many of the historical uses of honey.

1) Healing wounds and burns

There have been some cases in which people have reported positive effects of using honey in treating wounds.
review published in The Cochrane Libraryindicated that honey might be able to help heal burns. The lead author of the study said that "topical honey is cheaper than other interventions, notably oral antibiotics, which are often used and may have other deleterious side effects."
However, there is a lack of evidence to fully support this claim. In fact, a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases concluded that applying medical-grade honey to the wounds of patients has no advantage over normal antibioticsamong patients undergoing dialysis.
Honey should never be given to young infants as it can cause botulism, a rare but severe type of food poisoning.

2) Reducing the duration of diarrhea

According to research-based reviews on honey, it has been shown to decrease the severity and duration of diarrhea. Honey also promotes increased potassium and water intake, which is particularly helpful when experiencing diarrhea.
Research that took place in Lagos, Nigeria suggests that honey has also shown the ability to block the actions of pathogens that commonly cause diarrhea.

3) Preventing acid reflux

Recent research has shown that honey can reduce the upward flow of stomach acid and undigested food by lining the esophagus and stomach.
This has helped to reduce the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD can cause inflammationacid reflux, and heartburn.

4) Fighting infections

In 2010, scientists from the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam reported in FASEB Journal that honey's ability to kill bacteria lies in a protein called defensin-1.
A more recent study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases showed that a certain type of honey, called Manuka honey, can help prevent the bacteria Clostridium difficile from settling in the body. C. difficile is known for causing severe diarrhea and sickness.
Some studies have revealed that Manuka honey may even be effective for the treatment of MRSAinfections.

Honey Properties

Honey contains negligible amounts of vitamins and minerals.
Properties

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database, one tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, 17.3 grams (g) of sugar, and 0 g of fiber, fat, and protein.
Choosing honey over refined and processed sugar may lead to long-term health benefits. Honey is known to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and soothing effects.
It is made up of glucose, fructose, and minerals, such as iron, calcium, phosphate, sodium chloride, potassium, and magnesium.
Below is a typical honey profile, according to BeeSource:
  • Fructose: 38.2 percent
  • Glucose: 31.3 percent
  • Maltose: 7.1 percent
  • Sucrose: 1.3 percent
  • Water: 17.2 percent
  • Higher sugars: 1.5 percent
  • Ash: 0.2 percent
  • Other: 3.2 percent
The slightly acidic pH level of honey is what helps prevent the growth of bacteria, while its antioxidant elements clean up free radicals that are linked to diseases.
The physical properties of honey vary depending on the specific flora used in its production, as well as its water content.

Hive Health Monitor

We've gathered thousands of hours of beehive audio from all over the world to bring you the BuzzBox Hive Health Monitor. Our team of data scientists have built a system that can automatically tell you how your bees are doing based on input from the kit's microphone, and you'll get updates on your smart phone in real time.
We can currently track the following states:
  • Empty/Collapsed
  • Active/Normal
  • Pre-Swarm/Swarm
  • Missing Queen
Just like a Tesla, we can broadcast over-the-air product updates to the entire BuzzBox fleet, so as we get more data from you, we'll add new hive classifications.

The BuzzBox App is available for both Android and iOS. Developed by Stanfy, we're in active beta and are constantly adding new features based on feedback from beekeepers and our community. Check out the collaboration section below to tell us what you want to see!
Stay tuned as we add more hive states when the data comes back from the field:
  • Varroa Mites
  • Wax Moths
  • Pesticide Toxicity
  • More to come...

We're working with an accredited lab to gather data from 24 hives exposed to a variety of pesticides. We sincerely hope that bees exposed to pesticides emit a unique audio signal that we can detect. The results will start to come through at the beginning of August, 2017, and if they're positive, we'll begin adding pesticide-detecting features to the BuzzBox. Imagine receiving immediate warning when your bees face toxicity sickness. This line of thought opens up a variety of exciting possibilities, so watch this space for updates.

The heart of the project is our beehive audio classification system. Using a growing database of beehive audio and metadata, we've added a hive health monitor to the BuzzBox app so you know what your bees are doing in real time. For more information, check out the Open Source Beehives documentation.
